An Article in the Daily Mail features the adopted mother of a young man with Down's Syndrome. She's basically acknowledging the fact that her son has a sex drive, is interested in women and looks forward to having his first sexual experience. And, with what I think is an air of realism, she is open to the idea that for him to get that experience, he may well have to pay for it.
And that's when the slanging match begins. Comment after comment of ignorance and patronism from people who may never know what it feels like to ache for the intimate touch of another human being and realise that where disability does not make it logistically practical to get out there and date, disability may make it aesthetically challenging to be Brad Pitt or Halle Berry. Or both.
About a year ago, a young man in his 30's managed, with the cooperation of one of his carers, to sneak me in to his home while his mother was out for a hospital appointment. We'd discussed it before and he'd given me to understand that when the time came for him to see me, the notice might be a bit short, since his mother seldom went out and did her best to return as soon as possible so he would not be alone. He had an advanced stage of Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy. I didn't realise the extent of his disability until I got there. Then I appreciated the fact that the young man relied on someone else to place the phone close to his mouth when he had a call. That he had relied on his carer to clean and bathe him and leave him naked in his bed hoist for my arrival. That he relied on his carer to politely open the door and usher me into his bedroom where a porn movie was playing on a wide screen TV that seemed to reach from one end of the wall to the other. That he relied on the carer to give me my fee - just when you think the exchange of money for sex cannot be more awkward! In short, this young man had arranged this whole clandestine meeting that he could not have pulled off on his how, and was petrified that his mother would return to find us at it.
And to his joy, she did not. And he cried when I mounted him ... face it, there was no way a man who could not operate his own bed hoist was going to get on top for the traditional missionary position. "I thought, I was going to die a virgin," he wept, "At last!"

What does sex feel like? Will he ever experience sex? Or will he take the sexual frustration to the grave? Questions he could not ask any one close to him.
And I wonder how many other people that would be totally dependent on others to make an assignation happen, must live in want thanks to the ignorance of those that know better. Sometimes, it does have to be a parent, or parents, that arrange a sexual assignation with a sex worker; hard as it may be. But what an act of love, to make sure your child does not get ripped off in the cut throat world of prostitution!
The ability to pay for sex should be his, and any one's uninterfered with right. Because sex isn't always easy to come by. And it's therapeutic and morale boosting qualities are taken for granted by those of us that don't have to think about it.
