Yes, I know what being a prostitute is really like
I saw a post on a forum called dearcupid. It was from a girl of about 20, down on her luck after losing her job. Someone had suggested she could earn a lot of money as a prostitute. She was asking the users of that forum what they thought. The precise question was: Does any one know what being a prostitute is really like?
The name Cupid should say it all that that would have to be the strangest place to be seeking advice on whether or not to become a prostitute. Quite predictably the responses she got were regurgitating the normal arguments against prostitution. I felt I had to step in as the lone voice of reason. I half expected it not to be posted. No one ever wants to publish anything endorsing prostitution. Which is why escort blogs are a gift for those of us involved to set the record straight. But to my amazement my response was not only published, but appreciated by the other forum members, including some of the ones that had spoken critically of the sex industry. That has really made my day.

I have to say, I am a prostitute. I am 41 and have been an escort for about five years. I charge £150 pounds an hour if the client comes to me. £200 an hour if I go to the client in a hotel or their home. That is a fairly average rate. The "high class" escorts charge as much as twice what I do. And they get it.
I have NEVER been raped, nor attacked by a client. Like some of my fellow working girls, we have measures in place which keep us safe, save for the odd guy that thinks he can get away without paying the agreed fee.
I get on splendidly with the majority of my clients, and even have half of them on my Christmas card list and vice versa. This is the exception, though and not the norm ... most men want a prostitute to avoid the entanglements of a relationship.
I do not drink, do not smoke and do not take drugs. I lead a fairly normal life in between and only tell people on a need to know basis. The few people that know I am a prostitute are pleasantly surprised to know that normal, balanced people can be prostitutes.
Being a prostitute does not screw with my head. I went in to it knowing what I was doing and I stick to that. I would rather charge for sex than give some drunken stranger I met in a night club free sex.
Of all the well meaning but judgemental people writing here in condemnation of ladies that voluntarily sell their intimacy, how many of you harbour the same indignation about the unprotected sex between drunken and coked-up-to-their-eye-ball strangers clocking up one night stands without a second thought?
By choice I do not have a partner, but when I am ready, I shall be able to do so without any baggage and would prefer a man who understands the realities of the sex industry, rather than the media hype. There are many women (and men, judging from the demand for our services) who have never sold their body and cannot find a relationship. Relationships are hard work, prossie or not.
Also spare a thought for disabled men and women whose only hope of experiencing sex is with a sex worker. I, and many of my fellow prostitute colleagues, are proud to be making a quality and memorable experience available to men and women with profound disabilities. And their families are also often grateful to us for taking the anguish out of this issue.
Is prostitution dangerous? Potentially, you bet it is. So is dating, potentially; so is marriage, potentially. More women are murdered and or attacked by boyfriends and husbands in any one year than women on the game murdered or attacked by clients.
Many prostitutes value their bodies as their principal source of income and do not expose themselves to diseases in the same way the average young free and single men and women do in this day and age. How many of you reading this have not taken a gamble with unprotected sex with someone you could not absolutely vouch for as being clean? You are more likely to get infected by an unfaithful boyfriend who picked it up in a night club quickie than you are from a hooker, provided you choose your hooker with care.
I have no experience of street prostitution and cannot speak for what happens there, although it sounds pretty grim to me. On my way home from bookings at five star hotels, I’ve driven past street hookers standing shivering on street corners waiting to turn a cheap trick so they can buy their next drug fix. This saddens me profoundly. But I don't have the answers for tackling this problem and can only go about my own business in a way that does not present a problem for society.
Can you do it? Only you really know the answer. But do not go into it lightly, that is all I can say. There are clients out there ready to mess about with your mind if you will allow them to.
